Illustrated in the recent book, “The Sexy Years” by Suzanne Somers, bioidentical hormone therapy helps regain the physical, mental
and emotional vitality of ones younger years.
Studies show age isn’t necessarily to blame for a decreased quality of life, a reduced or unbalanced hormone level is. The most likely sufferers of hormone deficiency are men and women between the ages of 35 and 55. This is the age range when most adults expect to go through menopause or andropause (also known as male menopause).
Bio-identical Hormone Therapy or Human Identical Hormone Therapy
Beneficial for both Men and Women
Bio-identical hormone therapy combined with diet and exercise may decrease
aging and promote health, energy and vitality for both woman and men. By
monitoring and replacing your own declining natural hormones you are able
to feel and look younger and healthier.
Women have long had the opportunity for Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)
during menopause, and the benefits are obvious. Women feel better, have more
energy, more libido and a greater defense from the risks of coronary artery
disease and osteoporosis. Men can also expect the same benefits from HRT.
An individualized designed bioidentical hormone therapy program combined
with fitness and nutrition can be implemented to help improve physical health,
mental acuity and sexual drive.
Bio-identical Hormone replacement and the role of hormones in
health, weight management and aging.
Hormones are the body’s chemical “messengers,” delivering important directives
that influence growth, metabolism, reproduction, sexual function and mood.
So many of our body’s functions depend upon hormones. Our youthful appearance,
energy levels, mood, sex drive, sleep patterns, and mental focus are all hormone
dependent. Our hormones allow us to live life to the fullest and optimize our physical
performance.
As we age, our hormone production declines. Many of us feel the decline in essential
hormones through mental and physical symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, lack of
sex drive and poor metal focus. You may also have more specific symptoms due to
declines in specific hormones.
Who would benefit from Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT)?
Bioidentical hormones replacement therapy (BHRT) may be beneficial for all who have hormonal imbalances. Hormonal
imbalances can occur at any age and can affect both men and women.
Women
Woman suffering hormonal imbalances causing hot flashes, night sweats, memory loss, mood swings, weight gain, and low libido are turning to Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy. Our bioidentical hormones physicians can design individualized programs specifically for each woman suffering from early menopause symptoms, menopause, perimenopause, and severe PMS.
Men
Men experiencing lost libido, energy, loss of muscle mass ,fatigue, stress, erectile dysfunction, weight gain,
depression, and symptoms of andropause, male menopause.
When should you consider Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy?
Whenever a hormonal imbalance is diagnosed it can be treated using bioidentical hormones. Many hormonal imbalances
are subtle in nature. They generate only mild symptoms that are very often undiagnosed and untreated. Addressing these
sub-clinical hormonal imbalances with bioidentical hormones replacement therapy may significantly improve the quality
of life and well-being of the person for years to come.
What kind of results can you expect from Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy?
Individuals decide to become patients to increase their energy level, including sexual energy, reducebody fat,
increase lean muscle, improve cognitive function, lower cholesterol, enhance mood, improve
ability to handle stress, improve bone density, heart health, enhanced feeling of well being
and strengthen the immune system so as to remain as disease free as possible.
Yes, Bioidentical hormones can work wonders, but only if combined with dietary and life style
changes. Eating right and exercising are equally important aspects of bioidentical hormone
therapy or hormone replacement therapy (BHRT). If your hormones are out of balance, your
body will not respond optimally to improved nutrition and exercise. As your hormones, nutrition,
fitness, and lifestyle improve – you will begin to feel like your old self with improved energy, vitality and results.
It’s important that the hormones be used in addition to the combination approach outlined above. Note tht
Suzanne Somers and Oprah are among this minority — they began with a healthy diet and lifestyle that supported
the endocrine system and experienced amazing results but not all symptoms where reduced or reversed.
How do you begin Bio-identical hormone therapy?
In our practice, we have had the greatest success with an individualized approach. We begin with laboratory tests
of hormone levels (a so-called “hormone panel”). When warranted, we then prescribe a precise dosage of
bio-identical estrogens, progesterone, testosterone, and/or DHEA that is prepared at a FDA registered compounding
pharmacy. Each patient is then monitored carefully through regular follow-up hormone panels to ensure symptom
relief at the lowest possible dosage. In the initial stages, we will do a hormone panel every three months. Once
balance is restored, we’ll do one panel a year at the time of the annual exam.
Our Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Program Consists of:
Initial Doctor visit
Detailed hormonal assessment
Comprehensive biochemical and metabolic evaluation (lab test)
Once we know the nature of your hormonal imbalance, we provide you with individualized recommendation for:
Dietary changes
Lifestyle modifications
Nutriceutical supplements
Prescription for bio-identical hormones as determined by your laboratory tests
It is very important for the doctor to decide during your initial visit what type of hormones
and/or hormone metabolites are to be evaluated. Then, the most appropriate route of
measurement can be determined. We offer the following hormonal panels:
Blood Test (Serum)
The blood test measures free and bound hormones.
This represents circulating hormones detected at the time of the test.
Serum is the test of choice for evaluation of glandular secretion.
24 Hour Urine Hormones Evaluation Test and First Void Morning Urine
This test measures hormones released and circulating in the body in a 24hr period as
well as metabolites of selected hormones.
Urine is the test of choice for assessment of peripheral metabolism.
Saliva Test
Testing for hormones using saliva, is a method which has gained popularity in the recent
years. This is due to the simplicity and noninvasive nature of sample collection.
Saliva tests reflect only the metabolic process of salivary glands and a limited passive
diffusion of the hormones from the bloodstream.
This test does not represent circulating hormones.
Saliva is used for selected situations such as cortisol and melatonin monitoring of
AM/PM circadian rhythm.
Typically one or more tests are recommended.
